Types of Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is histologically classified into two main forms: small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which itself includes several subtypes (adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma), each having distinct clinical features and treatment approaches. SCLC accounts for approximately 15% of lung cancer cases, while NSCLC is responsible for almost 85% of lung cancer cases..
symptoms of lung cancer
Some common symptoms of lung cancer include:
  • Persistent cough, lasting for at least 3 weeks (with or without coughing up blood)
  • Unintentional weight loss (more than 5% within 6 months)
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Chest pain (due to tumor invasion of the pleura or chest wall)
  • Bone pain (due to metastases, typically in the spine, pelvis, and long bones)

Stages of the Disease
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type of lung cancer, has five stages:
  •   Stage 0 : Cancer is confined to the lining of the airways, has not invaded deeper tissues, and has not spread beyond the lungs.
  •   Stage 1 : Cancer is present in the lung tissue but not in lymph nodes or other organs.
  •   Stage 2 : Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes on the same side of the chest, invaded the chest wall, diaphragm, or outer lining of the lung.
  •   Stage 3 : Cancer has spread to lymph nodes on both sides of the chest, mediastinum (the area between the lungs), or other structures in the chest such as the heart,      esophagus, or trachea.
  •   Stage 4: Cancer has spread to distant organs such as the brain, bones, liver, or supraclavicular lymph nodes.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC), a less common but more aggressive type of lung cancer, has two stages:
  •  Limited stage : Cancer is confined to one lung and nearby lymph nodes on the same side of the chest.
  •  Extensive stage : Cancer has spread beyond one lung and nearby lymph nodes and may have reached distant lymph nodes or other organs.
Determining the stage of lung cancer helps identify the best treatment options and provide prognostic information for each patient. Treatment may include surgery,   chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or palliative care. Survival rates and life expectancy in lung cancer patients depend on several   factors, including the type and stage of cancer, patient age, overall health, and treatment response.

Definition of Depression

Depression is a common mood disorder that affects approximately 5% of adults worldwide. This disorder leads to a continuous feeling of sadness, loss of interest in daily activities, and a decrease in motivation. It can occur due to problems in school, work, or personal life, and can lead to further difficulties in various areas. Contrary to popular belief, depression is different from normal mood and emotional changes related to everyday life and can severely impact all aspects of life, including relationships with family, friends, and society, to the extent that it may even result in suicide in severe cases. Individuals can conceal the symptoms of depression to the point where they appear happy, healthy, and normal, making it challenging to diagnose and provide appropriate treatment. Depression can affect anyone, although individuals who have experienced abuse, loss of loved ones, or other stress-inducing events are more susceptible to developing depression. It is estimated that around 7% of the global population experiences a major depressive disorder annually. However, these numbers are not very precise as many individuals suffering from depression do not seek medical help. The prevalence of depression is three times higher in individuals aged 18 to 29 compared to those over 60 years old. Additionally, women are 1.5 to 3 times more likely to experience depression than men during adolescence.

Symptoms of Depression and Diagnostic Criteria

The diagnostic stage is one of the most important steps as it determines the approach and Depression Treatment plan. The examination of depression symptoms begins by assessing changes in sleep pattes, appetite, and energy levels. At least five of the following criteria are necessary for a clinical diagnosis (one of the symptoms must be either a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure):

  1. Sleep disturbances
  2. Loss of interest or pleasure
  3. Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  4. Fatigue and disrupted energy levels
  5. Impaired concentration and attention
  6. Changes in appetite and weight
  7. Depressed mood
  8. Disturbances in sexual desire

Among these, all patients with depression should be evaluated for suicidal risk. Any suicide risk should be promptly addressed, which may involve hospitalization or close and frequent monitoring. After assessing the aforementioned criteria, the physician also studies the patient’s medical, family, and social background to make an appropriate evaluation for selecting the treatment plan. Common features in all depressive disorders include feelings of sadness, emptiness, or irritable mood accompanied by physical symptoms such as fatigue and low energy levels, decreased pain tolerance such as lower back pain and other muscular pains, visual problems or decreased vision, stomach pain and digestive problems, and disruptions‌‌ in bowel movements, significantly impacting an individual’s functioning. Depending on the severity and intensity of symptoms, as well as the impact of the condition on a person’s functioning, a depressive episode can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe.‌

Introduction to Microdosing

While the experiences of consuming high doses of psilocybin-containing mushrooms have been extensively studied, recent research has focused on a specific therapeutic approach called microdosing. Microdosing involves the regular use of low doses (5 to 10% of the usual dose) of psychoactive (mind-altering) drugs.

Microdosing Psilocybin

Microdosing Psilocybin  involves the use of low doses (100-300 milligrams of dried mushrooms, equivalent to 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams of pure psilocybin) at regular intervals (every 48 to 72 hours). The effects of psilocybin on the body are dose-dependent, and as the dosage increases, individuals may experience various effects. These effects range from a mild sedating sensation at lower doses to a profound mental jouey at higher doses, including sensory blending such as seeing sounds, hearing colors, feeling unity with nature, and even the sensation of the soul leaving the body. After the substance is cleared from the body, these states retu to normal. The amount of psilocybin used in the microdosing method does not cause alterations in the individual’s perceptual aspects and is devoid of hallucinogenic effects.

This article discusses the scientific aspects of microdosing psilocybin, its effects, research findings, and potential applications.

The benefits of full-dose psychedelics

While more than a thousand early studies linked psychedelic use with beneficial effects , there was a 40-year pause on psychedelic research following the prohibition of these substances. Despite continued prohibition, mode research has revealed the promising potential of LSD and psilocybin for treating alcohol and tobacco dependence , depression, and end-of-life anxiety, while related research on 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has shown great promise for treating post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychedelics can also increase openness and occasion mystical-type experiences in healthy controls. As full-dose psychedelics appear to aide in the relief of severe, chronic psychiatric conditions (e.g. depression, anxiety, PTSD), milder mental health conces may plausibly be treated by lower, recurring doses. This is especially worth considering if certain full-dose outcomes are found to rely on purely pharmacologic mechanisms rather than primarily on phenomenological experiences.

Limiting microdosing research to topics that have been investigated in full-dose research could prematurely overlook unpredicted and potentially distinct microdosing outcomes. Full-dose research has employed various focal assessments of symptomatology, mood, and personality that are likely applicable to microdosing research, but due to the low doses and lack of perceptual alteration intended in microdosing, other full-dose phenomena, such as ego dissolution and mystical-type experiences, are less relevant to microdosing research. Instead, as a means of preparing for a broad range of outcomes, the present work solicited open-ended reports of benefits and challenges. Additionally, as psychedelic substances act on distinct yet overlapping neural receptor sites, it seems plausible that distinct pattes could emerge for different substances. The present study thus included microdosers who used LSD, psilocybin, or both.

Traumatic events can be very difficult to come to terms with, but confronting your feelings and getting professional help is often the only way of effectively treating PTSD.

It's possible for PTSD to be successfully treated many years after the traumatic event or events occurred, which means it's never too late to get help.

Assessment

Before having treatment for PTSD, a detailed assessment of your symptoms will be carried out to ensure treatment is tailored to your individual needs. This may be carried out by a GP or specialist.

You can see a GP to start on this process, or you can refer yourself for assessment to a talking therapy service. You're likely to be offered treatment if you've had symptoms of PTSD for more than 4 weeks or your symptoms are severe.

There are a number of mental health specialists you may see if you have PTSD, such as a psychological therapist, psychologist, community psychiatric nurse or psychiatrist.

Treatment

Post-traumatic stress disorder treatment can help you regain a sense of control over your life. The primary treatment is psychotherapy, but can also include medication. Combining these treatments can help improve your symptoms by:

  • Teaching you skills to address your symptoms
  • Helping you think better about yourself, others and the world
  • Leaing ways to cope if any symptoms arise again
  • Treating other problems often related to traumatic experiences, such as depression, anxiety, or misuse of alcohol or drugs

You don't have to try to handle the burden of PTSD on your own.

Psychotherapy

Several types of psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, may be used to treat children and adults with PTSD. Some types of psychotherapy used in PTSD treatment include:

  • Cognitive therapy. This type of talk therapy helps you recognize the ways of thinking (cognitive pattes) that are keeping you stuck — for example, negative beliefs about yourself and the risk of traumatic things happening again. For PTSD, cognitive therapy often is used along with exposure therapy.
  • Exposure therapy. This behavioral therapy helps you safely face both situations and memories that you find frightening so that you can lea to cope with them effectively. Exposure therapy can be particularly helpful for flashbacks and nightmares. One approach uses virtual reality programs that allow you to re-enter the setting in which you experienced trauma.
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR combines exposure therapy with a series of guided eye movements that help you process traumatic memories and change how you react to them.

Your therapist can help you develop stress management skills to help you better handle stressful situations and cope with stress in your life.

All these approaches can help you gain control of lasting fear after a traumatic event. You and your mental health professional can discuss what type of therapy or combination of therapies may best meet your needs.

You may try individual therapy, group therapy or both. Group therapy can offer a way to connect with others going through similar experiences.

The Potential of Psilocybin for PTSD Treatment

With the recognition of various therapeutic approaches for trauma-related disorders, the therapeutic potential of psilocybin in reducing and improving symptoms of PTSD has gained attention among researchers since the late 1990s. Significant improvement and sustained alleviation of symptoms, including increased focus and mood enhancement in patients, are among the characteristics of PTSD treatment with psilocybin.

What Are Magic Mushrooms?

Some kinds of mushrooms contain psilocybin and psilocyn, substances that can cause hallucinations. Used in large enough doses, these mushrooms have effects similar to the drug LSD.

Psilocybin Half-Life

Half life of psilocybin is about 2.5 hours. This means that it takes about 2.5 hours for the drug’s presence to be reduced by half within your system.

How Long Do the Effects of Psilocybin Last?

The effects of psilocybin generally last about 6 hours. However, the intensity of the experience can vary widely depending on the subject.

Psilocybin and Depression Treatment

Medications and psychotherapy are effective for most people with depression. Your primary care doctor or psychiatrist can prescribe medications to relieve symptoms. However, many people with depression also benefit from seeing a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional.

If you have severe depression, you may need a hospital stay, or you may need to participate in an outpatient treatment program until your symptoms improve.

Psilocybin is a psychoactive compound found in certain species of mushrooms, known as psilocybin mushrooms. In novel therapeutic approaches, this medication is combined with supportive psychotherapy to help individuals explore the root causes of their mental health issues and address them. Various studies in recent years have shown that psilocybin eliminates the damaging and distressing thought pattes characteristic of depression by enhancing the connectivity between different regions of the brain. According to multiple research findings, treatment with psilocybin can lead to faster, more comprehensive, and more sustainable antidepressant effects, especially in treatment-resistant individuals. Some of these effects have persisted for at least one year in some patients, while the treatment durability of other medications is much shorter and more subject to relapse.

Here"s a closer look at depression treatment options.

Psilocybin and psilocin, two psychoactive components found in “magic mushrooms,” have therapeutic potential in a number of mental health disorders without the addictiveness and overdose risks found in other mind-altering drugs, such as cocaine, methamphetamines and alcohol. Psychedelic mushrooms occur naturally, are wide distributed and easily accessible.

Fast facts on psilocybin

Psilocybin can have both positive and negative physical and psychological effects.

Psilocybin is not naturally addictive.

The drug can trigger psychotic episodes.

Individuals with a family history of psychosis face an increased risk of an adverse psychiatric reaction to psilocybin.

PSILOCYBIN

Spud Gene’s team of scientists has achieved a remarkable breakthrough in Iran by successfully extracting and purifying the active compound psilocybin from the Psilocybe cubensis mushroom with a purity level exceeding 99.9% and in accordance with global standards. Spud Gene proudly introduces itself as the first and only producer of psilocybin in the country. The company offers psilocybin in three forms: solution, solid crystals, and powder, accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (COA).

How it works

Psilocybin works by activating serotonin receptors, most often in the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain affects mood, cognition, and perception. Hallucinogens also work in other regions of the brain that regulate arousal and panic responses.

Psilocybin does not always cause active visual or auditory hallucinations. Instead, it distorts how some people that use the drug perceive objects and people already in their environment.

The quantity of the drug a person consumes, their past experiences, and their expectations of how the experience will take shape can all impact the effects of psilocybin.

The hallucinogenic effects of psilocybin usually occur within 30 minutes after a person ingests it and last 4–6 hours. In some individuals, changes in sensory perception and thought pattes can last for several days.

What are the risks?

The use of psilocybin is also associated with negative physical and psychological consequences. Physical effects that appear within 20 minutes of ingestion and last approximately 6 hours include nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, drowsiness, and lack of coordination. While there is no evidence that users can become physically dependent on psilocybin, tolerance to the drug develops when it is taken consistently over a short period of time.

Psychiatric consequences of psilocybin use include hallucinations and the inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Panic and psychotic reactions may also occur, especially if the user takes a large dose.

Signs and Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Most lung cancers do not cause any symptoms until they have spread, but some people with early lung cancer do have symptoms. If you go to your doctor when you first notice symptoms, your cancer might be diagnosed at an earlier stage, when treatment is more likely to be effective.

Most of these symptoms are more likely to be caused by something other than lung cancer. Still, if you have any of these problems, it’s important to see your doctor right away so the cause can be found and treated, if needed.

Lung Cancer Symptoms

Some common symptoms of lung cancer include:

Persistent cough, lasting for at least 3 weeks (with or without coughing up blood)

Unintentional weight loss (more than 5% within 6 months)

Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

Chest pain (due to tumor invasion of the pleura or chest wall)

Bone pain (due to metastases, typically in the spine, pelvis, and long bones)

What are the types of lung cancer?

There are many cancers that affect the lungs, but we usually use the term “lung cancer” for two main kinds: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer. It accounts for over 80% of lung cancer cases. Common types include adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Adenosquamous carcinoma and sarcomatoid carcinoma are two less common types of NSCLC.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) grows more quickly and is harder to treat than NSCLC. It’s often found as a relatively small lung tumor that’s already spread to other parts of your body. Specific types of SCLC include small cell carcinoma (also called oat cell carcinoma) and combined small cell carcinoma.

Other types of cancer in the lungs

Other types of cancer can start in or around your lungs, including lymphomas (cancer in your lymph nodes), sarcomas (cancer in your bones or soft tissue) and pleural mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of your lungs). These are treated differently and usually aren’t referred to as lung cancer.

What medications/treatments are used in lung cancer?

Lung cancer treatments include surgery, radiofrequency ablation, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted drug therapy and immunotherapy.

Enlisting the help of trusted loved ones or a support group can help you consider your options and voice your preferences. Cancer treatment is often a process, and taking care of yourself is one of its most important parts.
